Media statement by Minister Mthethwa 4 June 2010

DURBAN – 04 June 2010.  The Minister of Police, Nathi Mthethwa today applauded and welcomed the harsh sentence given to one of the persons who was involved in the Inanda police station firearm theft in the past weeks.

Following an investigation by the department’s elite investigative unit, the Hawks, six persons were arrested.  Four of the 98 firearms have been recovered and the investigation is still continuing.  The station’s commander has since been removed from the station.
Thulisani Trevor Mfeka (29), an exhibit clerk at the station pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment in the Durban Regional Court today.  The remaining five appeared in court on Wednesday, 02 May and were granted bail of R3000-00 each.
“We welcome this sentence as it sends a strong message that we are serious about fighting corruption and crime.  When we spoke about cleaning the Force of a few rotten apples that may be within, some of the sceptics thought we were just grandstanding and seeking to create media headlines.  We further compliment the Justice and Constitutional Development for their swift action in ensuring that justice is carried out swiftly,” stated Minister Mthethwa.
The Minister added that society looks upon police to fight the evil deeds of crime and corruption and that to succeed in this work; police must be upright and principled.  “Police stations are the face of our policing effort.  The treatment we give to people who come in search of some help leaves lasting impressions not only about the particular station, but about South African Police Service (SAPS) as a whole.”
Accordingly, if there are still any such members who may be found to be collaborating with criminals, the ministry wishes to ascertain society that we will uproot and punish them.  The police leadership will not tolerate such few elements to negatively portray the majority of our SAPS members as reckless and irresponsible.
