 SA helps strengthen AU position against arms trafficking
African Union Strategy on the Control of Illicit Proliferation, Circulation and Trafficking of Small

From 26-30 September 2011, the African Union met in Togo to discuss small arms control through the African Union Strategy on the Control of Illicit Proliferation, Circulation and Trafficking of Small Arms and Light Weapons and to develop an African Common Position on the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT).
These African Union agreements are important because they represent consensus from the majority of countries of the African continent, and will form part of discussions and negotiations at forthcoming events on the UN Programme of Action on small arms, and the Arms Trade Treaty.
IANSA women formed part of the IANSA team of 13 members from South Africa, as well as Burkina Faso, Chad, DR Congo, Egypt, Gabon, Ghana, Mali, Namibia, Rwanda, Togo, Uganda and Zambia. They advocated for the inclusion of gender perspectives and the connection to gender based violence against women with measures on small arms control.
IANSA women lobbied hard and we can now celebrate two successes that support our work through the inclusion of the following text in each document:

Draft African Union Common Position on an Arms Trade Treaty - Wednesday, January 25, 2012

3.3 Gender dimension: To promote and enhance the participation of all gender groupings especially women in the design and implementation of initiatives to fight proliferation of illicit small arms and light weapons at all levels.

Parameters and Criteria
34. Conventional arms transfers shall not be authorized if they violate the objectives of an Arms Trade Treaty, as expressed in Article 25 of this common position, and will be assessed using the following parameters:
b) risk for the transfer to adversely impact on national, regional and international stability, peace and security and to provoke or fuel armed and sexual violence against women and children, and armed conflict;
35. In applying these criteria, the following shall be considered:
xi. whether the transfer would exacerbate gender based violence in violation of UN resolutions 1325, 1820, 1889

Gun Free South Africa are exploring the role and potential impact of mass media messaging for reducing gun violence in South Africa. We are doing this in partnership with the creative agency Young and Rubicam (Y&R). So far the results have been extremely positive. One of the campaigns has recently won a prestigious ‘Loerie Award’. Check out the campaign on YouTube:

 Schools must be Firearm Free Zones
The recent spate of gun violence at Kondelani Junior Secondary School in Soshanguve is a terrible tragedy that could have been prevented.*
•On Monday 15 November 2010 the school’s Social Worker Rachel Maikabi was shot dead by her ex-boyfriend Itumeleng Dlamini who then shot and killed himself.
•Simon Mthimunye was shot and killed by a stray bullet while waiting to register his niece and nephew for social grants.
•On Tuesday 16 November 2010 Dlamini’s three friends arrived at the school with their guns, and barged into classrooms looking for Maikabi’s new lover.

30 July 2011 - MONTREAL - There are two basic crime scenes when it comes to gun violence in Canada. One involves weapons that are traceable - sometimes using the $1 billion long-gun registry that is likely to be scrapped by the Conservative government this fall, as promised. The other - far more common - involves guns that are not traceable because they are not registered, the registration number was erased or the guns used to kill are never found.
